*Baboia
The baboia is the Catalan ancestor of the roulette wheel. It was a fairground attraction where the player span an arm with a metal blade revolving round an axis which, when it stopped, pointed to a number that corresponded to a prize. Baboias were actually a very popular form of gambling in Catalonia until quite recently. One of the first documented references to this game dates back to the early seventeenth century, and expressly forbade it. Despite being banned, the game was very popular at fairs and popular festivals until well into the twentieth century.
Since we are a speciality ice cream parlour born in Catalonia and we work with local produce, recovering this term from Catalan history felt like the perfect tribute, reflecting the traditional ingredients we use, the forbidden pleasure of ice cream, and leaving our choice to chance by taking the responsibility for choosing the flavour away from us. It encapsulates something special, local, and above all fun like ice cream.
